When my daughter was small, she was learning to read little paperbacks with simple words but little in the way of story or any real content. I wanted to do something more, so I created a series of books using only a few sentences per page and involving a red dragon who pulls the kids into the computer and roams history through the internet.
The first book introduces Red, the Time Dragon, and we chose the Middle Ages to start because, well, he's a dragon! I try to show as much or more information with the pictures as with the story.
The second book in the series, "Racing the Waves", is the incredible story of the clipper ship Flying Cloud, navigated by Eleanor Creesy. It was unheard of to have a woman navigator at that time. Ellen set the world speed record from NY to San Francisco in 1851 and again in 1853. It stood unbroken by sail for 138 years. Tales of the Time Dragon comes in both a library edition and a paperback version, set at $3.99.
